Our predoctoral researcher Nerea Bilbao Barrenetxea has recently published an article titled «Climate change knocking on the door» in Basque newspaper Hiruka.
The article describes drastic changes in climate and the natural environment that indicate a significant impact of climate change. It highlights the alteration of seasons, such as the loss of autumn colors, the alteration of marine and terrestrial ecosystems, and extreme phenomena such as unusual storms. These changes are attributed to anthropogenic global warming, which has diverse consequences on temperature, precipitation and season length. Local examples, such as record high temperatures in the Basque Country, support these worrying trends. The climate projection indicates a possible shift towards a predominantly Mediterranean climate in the future, which would severely impact characteristic ecosystems. The article highlights the certainty that, if the current direction is not modified, these changes will transform dystopia into everyday reality.
